If you're new to coaching, you may have questions about how it works, or what you should expect in your coaching sessions. While every session is different, depending on the client's interests and goals, here's an overview of what coaching is, and what it isn't.
While mental health counseling or therapy can be an extremely valuable tool in anyone's plan of self-care, it is not the same thing as coaching. Where therapy may delve into the past to explore emotions, experiences and patterns of behavior, coaching primarily concentrates on the present and the client's future goals.
Your coach will always observe confidentiality, and uphold high ethical standards in your work together. Whatever your needs or goals, your coach is committed to supporting your growth. The coaching relationship may be just a few visits, or it may be a longer-term connection that shifts to meet the client's goals
In an initial session, the coach and client will get to know one another, and discuss the client's primary reasons for beginning a coaching relationship. This introduction will likely begin with an intake form the client completes in advance of the first session, and then continues in conversation. The first session will typically be 45-60 minutes, and will lay the groundwork for the coaching relationship.
After the intro session, future meetings will typically be 30-45 minutes, and in each session, the coach will work with the client to identify specific goals and desired outcomes. The client may be focused on one or more larger goals, with incremental progress occurring in each session, and between sessions; the client may also be diving into different challenges they want to explore in every session. The relationship, like the client's needs, are dynamic, and the focus and goals may change from one session to the next, or evolve more slowly over time.
